Before she was the Queen of Pop, Madonna made her very first film appearance in A Certain Sacrifice (1979–81), an underground drama directed by Stephen Jon Lewicki. She boldly landed the role by sending Lewicki a handwritten three-page letter, and was paid just $100 for her work.
The movie stayed unreleased until 1985—by which time Madonna had become a global superstar. She tried to block its release, but it was ultimately put out and marketed to cash in on her meteoric rise.
We’ve put together a Collector’s Guide to A Certain Sacrifice, featuring press and rare memorabilia including posters, displays, a press kit, the premiere invitation, international video releases, and Madonna’s original three-page letter to Lewicki.
