The masses gathered to see Madonna (USA) last May when she came to Brazil for a free concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

Over 1.6 million fans stormed the beach to see the Guinness World Records title-holder as she closed her Celebration tour, which grossed in excess of $225 million (£179.2 million) from 80 shows. The concert was the biggest of her career and was the largest audience ever for a free concert by a female artist

Featuring Brazilian guest stars like Anitta and Pabllo Vittar, the city and state governments spent 20 million reais ($3.9 million) on the concert – which featured multiple set and costume changes and impressive light displays. Giant screens were erected on the beach to make sure the millions of fans could see the performance, and people hung out of nearby skyscrapers while boats pulled up along the water to catch a glimpse of the show.

And she certainly did not disappoint – performing hits like “Nothing Really Matters”, “Vogue”, and “Like a Prayer”.

“Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world,” Madonna told the crowd at Copacabana Beach. “This place is magic.”
