Not that I’m a certified Madonna expert or anything, but I think it’s fair to say that when that 25-year-old Danceteria dolly Madonna appeared on American Bandstand for the first time on January 14, 1983, the world was not prepared for the level of chutzpah, obnoxiousness, fun, intelligence, dance credibility, and sexuality she’d be serving. Even if she was just lip-syncing “Holiday” while thrusting around in fishnets and three colors of eye shadow, she was bolder than any disco artist who preceded her. She didn’t care if you liked her, but she hated if you didn’t notice her.

And she still reigns now, seeing as she was 2013′s top earning musician. When Dick Clark interviews her after her performance and she impishly squeaks that she wants to rule the world, it’s hard not to think she had it planned all along. Watch and take a mini-holiday back to the roots of girly materialism. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Celebrate!
