In 1978, The Charlotte Observer spoke to Madonna Ciccone — then a dancer at the University of Michigan, well before her recording contract — in what may very well be her earliest interview.
We are sharing the full article today.
That summer, Madonna attended the American Dance Festival at Duke University. She was a sophomore at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and spent six weeks in Durham, training intensively from morning until late at night.
The writer described her theatrical appearance, noting that her round eyes, arched eyebrows, and finely drawn mouth formed a face that “Da Vinci would have loved.” She also possessed the physique of a dancer — lithe, agile, and driven.
Speaking to the reporter, Madonna admitted the schedule was “pretty draining and demanding,” explaining that she spent all her time dancing, day in and day out.
This rare early article offers a fascinating glimpse of Madonna’s dedication and artistry during her formative years — just a few short years before she would achieve worldwide fame.
