There are few people on earth who can reinvent themselves time and time again as masterfully as pop icon Madonna. The multifaceted entertainer celebrates her 56th birthday today, and has decades of transformative style under her belt to show for it. She pioneered the underwear-as-outerwear trend, causing a stir with risqué costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier. And as the artistic side of Madonna evolved, so did her beauty regime—the frizzy eighties hair went out the door with prom dresses and fingerless lace gloves. In fact the nineties saw a sleeker Madonna emerge overall, starting with glamorous looks from Gucci by Tom Ford, right through to a penchant for traditional Indian saris, and, ultimately, Kabbalah colors. After crossing the pond for her then beau Guy Ritchie, her style went the route of Saville Row, with local borrowed-from-the-boys tweeds (and a transatlantic accent to boot.) She returned to her rebel-rousing roots for a brief moment at the 2013 punk-themed Met Gala, going pantless on the red carpet in Givenchy. And it seemed that a modern-day Marlene Dietrich was in her mind’s eye when she stepped out at the Grammy Awards in a Ralph Lauren suit later that year. Clearly this material girl isn’t about to slow down anytime soon.
