In May 1985, Liz Smith reported that Madonna was expected to co-star with Prince in his next film following Purple Rain.

At the time, Madonna had just appeared on the cover of Time magazine, while veteran screenwriter Herb Ross had turned the project down. The film never brought them together, though they later collaborated on Madonna’s 1989 album Like a Prayer.
