The Next Best Thing is a comedy / drama about Abbie (Madonna) and Robert (Rupert Everett). Even though Robert is gay they end up having a child together. They decide to raise their son, Sam (played by Malcolm Stumpf) together, but when Abbie falls in love with another man a bitter custody battle begins.
