Madonna’s New Concert-Ticket Strategy: Higher Prices, Smaller Venues

When Madonna kicks off her new tour Tuesday, she’ll also be debuting a new ticket-pricing strategy: Smaller shows at higher prices.

The 61-year-old pop-music pioneer, who holds the record for the highest-grossing concert tour by a woman, is planning her 11th tour around theaters, smaller venues than the arenas that dominated previous tours. And fans will be paying more, especially at the high end.

Long one of the concert industry’s biggest acts, Madonna will open her latest tour, called “Madame X,” at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House, which seats 2,100 people—a fraction of the roughly 20,000 capacity of New York’s Madison Square Garden, where she played two shows four years ago on her last tour.

 

The prices will be higher: Around $300 on average, according to Arthur Fogel, Madonna’s longtime tour promoter and the president of global touring at Live Nation, the world’s biggest concert promoter. That’s up from about $160 for the last tour, according to Pollstar, a concert-industry trade publication.

The rise is due largely to an increase at the higher end. Tickets for “Madame X” start at about $50 for the cheapest seats, not much more than her last tour. But she’s charging roughly $750 for the costliest non-VIP tickets, not including fees—substantially higher than the $350 tickets on her last three tours, according to Mr. Fogel. VIP packages, which can include perks like pre-show receptions and backstage tours, reach as high as about $2,000.

“Madonna’s going to charge you what the market says those tickets are worth—and then, at the same time, she’s keeping her cheap seats,” says Bill Werde, a former editor of Billboard magazine and the director of Syracuse University’s Bandier music-industry program. “I actually think this is a brilliant example of understanding the market.”

Madonna declined a request for an interview.

The “Material Girl” singer’s ticket prices reflect a growing comfort among superstars with charging more-affluent fans what they can bear. While some holdouts like Ed Sheeran are keeping concert prices relatively low, stars from Jay-Z to Taylor Swift have been raising ticket prices in recent years, accentuating a trend that began when profits on recorded music were squeezed by digital forces like piracy, downloads and streaming.

Where To Buy The Madonna x Too Faced Makeup Collection To Remake The Singer’s Iconic Beauty Looks

It’s a match made in makeup heaven. Madonna and Too Faced created a makeup collection — but there’s a catch. The collection is comprised of two super exclusive kits that will only be available at a specific location, as revealed by Too Faced co-founder and chief creative officer Jerrod Blandino and Madonna on their individual Instagram feeds on Sept. 12.

The collaboration is inspired by looks that Madonna will actually be wearing on her upcoming tour in support of her latest album Madame XThe Madonna x Too Faced makeup kits will be sold at each tour date.

 

However, the collection is also temporarily available at the NYC Madame X pop-up shop from Sept. 13 through Sept. 19. The pop-up is located at 430 West 15 Street in Manhattan.

Blandino emphasized in the caption of his post that the kits are extremely limited. However, the brand could eventually sell the sets on its website at a later date if the demand is high.

Blandino also shared his signature “sneaky peek” of the products in a series of Instagram stories that he filmed while perusing the pop-up. He posted a picture of the price listing from the mobile store, which shows that the makeup collection costs $75. Overall, these products just might inspire fans to hurry up and nab tickets to the tour.

Here is all of the intel on the makeup collection, based entirely on Blandino’s big reveal. Each kit can be used on its own or together. Together, they equal a full face kit minus foundation and concealer.

The I Rise kit, which takes it name from a Madame X song, features a wallet-sized palette with exclusive eyeshadow and blush shades. It also boasts a brow pencil, the best-selling Better Than Sex mascara, and the Melted Matte lipstick in the Sell Out shade. The eye and cheek shades are named after Madonna’s biggest hits, like “Material Girl” and “Dress You Up.” The packaging features Madonna rocking a beret and golden curls.

The Medellin collection also shares its name with a Madame X track and boasts a palette with five shades of eyeshadow and a blush — all of which are also named after Madge’s mega hits, such as “Ray of Light” and “Like a Virgin.” It includes the brand’s semi-new Damn Girl! mascara, a Better Than Sex liquid eyeliner for perfecting those cat eye flicks, and a Melted Matte lippie in a burnt red shade. Everything You Need To Know About Madonna’s Make-Up Collection With Too Faced

Brace yourselves people, Madonna, who’s been dictating make-up trends since the 80s when she graced our screens in the ‘Like A Virgin’ music video, is finally getting her very own make-up collection.

The music icon already has her own skincare line MDNA SKIN, which would set you back £302 for a face cream, but thankfully these products are slightly more affordable.

Teaming up with Too Faced, the brand famous for their Better Than Sex Mascara, the collection includes two make-up box sets, both inspired by Madonna’s stage looks from her hotly anticipated Madame X Tour.

 
The idea? To give fans their own piece of Madonna to take home and achieve the exact make-up looks Madge wears on stage. Anything that gets us a little bit closer to being Madonna is all good in our books.

Kit number 1, named ‘Medellin Set’, consists of a ruby red shade of Too Faced’s Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick, a five part palette with four eyeshadows ranging from matte peaches to red shimmers and a baby pink blush. The set also includes the brand’s Damn Girl! Mascara and Better Than Sex Liquid Liner.

Kit 2, named ‘I Rise’ (in honour of the lead single from her new album) repeats the format but in soft dusty pink and rose gold shades.

Don’t even get us started on the packaging. Needless to say, it’s also pretty major, featuring the Madame X Tour logo with promo images of the queen herself. Make-up with Madonna on the front? We’re sold.

Whilst the exact prices haven’t been released yet we don’t expect it to come close to her skincare line. With average Too Faced prices ranging from £30-£40 for a decent-sized eyeshadow palette, we hope the Madonna collaboration will be along the same lines.

Live Nation Sued Over Madonna’s Performance at Eurovision Song Contest

Madonna’s Eurovision performance earlier this year was panned by many critics. Now she’s being sued over it as well.

The KAN Israeli public broadcaster, which produced the Eurovision Song Contest in May, filed a lawsuit in a Tel Aviv court on Thursday against Live Nation and Live Nation Israel. The suit, first reported by Israel’s Yediot Aharonot daily, alleges that Madonna’s representatives violated the terms of their agreement and reneged on financial promises.

A spokeswoman for KAN confirmed that the suit was filed, but declined to comment further. According to online court records, KAN is suing Live Nation for 1.375 million shekels ($390,000). A date for an initial hearing in the case has not been set yet. Live Nation Israel did not respond to a request for comment.

According to the court filing, KAN provided Madonna with technical and logistical support that went beyond the Eurovision production, costs that were supposed to be covered by the singer’s team. The additional support included projectors, headphones, additional stage assistants, tents, security and other extra staff. KAN alleges that Live Nation agreed to cover those costs but never paid up, and attempts to recoup the money since the show have been unsuccessful.

Madonna’s appearance fee for the 2019 Eurovision was covered by Canadian-Israeli billionaire Sylvan Adams. KAN publicly battled with the Israeli government over funding for the show, and was forced to take out a 70 million shekel loan (about $20 million) to cover the costs.

The Material Girl’s Eurovision performance was controversial from the start. After drawn-out negotiations, Madonna signed a contract only two days before she took the stage during the show’s grand finale. And KAN producers and the Eurovision organizers were not pleased that the singer displayed Israeli and Palestinian flags on the backs of two dancers during the show, something that had not appeared during rehearsals.

New Burlesque-Concert Hybrid Series Will Honor Madonna

Burlesque never sleeps in New Orleans and local star Bella Blue and New Orleans musician Rory Callais are coming together to make sure of it. The duo are launching the Iconography Series, which will feature a number of icons throughout popular music history, the first being the legendary Madonna.

On October 5 at One Eyed Jacks, the event entitled Bedtime stories: a Madonna Burlesque and LiveMusic Tribute will take place. The duo previously worked together on three successful shows showing tribute to the late David Bowie, combining live music and burlesque.

“After the last Bowie show, we all felt like we achieved what we set out to do,” says Callais, “but we didn’t want to stop working together.  So we revamped the concept in a way that allows us to challenge ourselves and keep things fresh with every new icon.”

The collaborative effort of the two shows how important the music culture is in New Orleans, no matter the genre; if it makes you feel good, it will be recognized and revamped. Madonna is the perfect start for their series, seeing how she has impacted a large population of people with her ability to be herself fearlessly. Many artists worldwide have internalized her strength and ability to change. 

The show will feature local burlesque performers Xena Xeit-Geist, Chere Noble, Franky Canga and many more. “Like Bowie, Madonna’s music is timeless and she has continuously and boldly reinvented herself again and again. You’ll see some familiar faces, some new faces, and new acts all set to Madonna’s most iconic songs,” say Blue.

Madonna x Too Faced Makeup Collection Will Be Available During the Madame X Tour

Madonna x Too Faced Makeup Box Sets I betcha you didn’t see that one coming! I mean a Madonna x Too Faced Makeup Collection? Whoa! Too Faced founder, Jerrod Blandino announced on Instagram today that he worked with Madonna to create not one but two new makeup kits based on two looks that Madonna will be sporting during her upcoming Madame X Tour. How do you get your hands on the Madonna x Too Faced Collection? You’ll either have to attend one of her shows will there collection will be exclusively available or starting tomorrow you can shop the collection at her Madame X Pop Up Shop at 430 W 15 St in Manhattan.

You gotta be quick though as they are apparently super limited at this location!

From the small video Jerrod posted there are two sets one is called the Medellin Set and it includes Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick, a 5-pan palette with what appears to be four shadows and 1 blush, Damn Girl! Mascara, and Better Than Sex Liquid Eyeliner. The other is called the I Rise Set and that includes Better Than Sex Mascara, a 5-pan palette which again seems to have a blush and 4 eyeshadows, Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick, and some sort of new chocolate eyeliner.

I guess the collection comes as no surprise as Jerrod has been posting about being besties with Madonna for a while. She sent him her skincare, she did a recent mini vid on Instagram using Too Faced Mascara, he mentioned going to a show of hers and having dinner with her, etc…seems about right that a makeup collection was in the works.

They haven’t mentioned a price for the Madonna X Too Faced Makeup Box Sets but I imagine it’ll be in the $39-$49 vicinity.

At the risk of pissing off hardcore Madonna fans I thought the collection looked really phoned in. The Melted Matte Liquified Lipsticks don’t even look like new shades and the eyeshadow palette is such a snore. Not to mention Damn Girl! Mascara is so horrible! Or at least I think it is.

I imagine after her tour they’ll launch this on Too Faced’s website. I can’t imagine it just being available so very limited but who knows. We’ll have to wait and see.

Madonna’s seminal, self-titled 1983 album is certified five-times platinum and sold over 10 million copies worldwide, captivating audiences with Top 10 hits including “Holiday,” “Lucky Star” and “Borderline.”

Madonna cemented her status as a cultural icon a year later with her follow-up release, Like a Virgin. Produced by Nile Rodgers, the record was her first to top the U.S. albums chart, its title track becoming her first #1 single. Certified diamond, Like a Virgin sold over 21 million copies worldwide. The record features hits including “Dress You Up, ” “Angel” and “Material Girl.”

In 1986, Madonna co-wrote and co-produced True Blue, which topped global album charts in 28 countries and the U.S. The critically acclaimed release has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in history. Mobieltjes niet welkom bij nieuwe tournee Madonna (Dutch news)

Fans die van plan zijn een show van Madonna’s Madame X-wereldtournee te bezoeken, krijgen te maken met een ‘telefoonloze belevenis’. Dit heeft de zangeres laten weten via Ticketmaster, dat de kaarten verkoopt. Het gebruik van een mobieltje, smartwatch, camera of andere opnameapparatuur is niet toegestaan in de concertruimte.

Bezoekers moeten vooraf bekijken op welke plek ze in de zaal zitten, omdat ze na binnenkomst geen toegang meer hebben tot het gescande kaartje op hun telefoon. De apparaten worden in een speciaal kastje opgeborgen, dat na afloop weer geopend worden. Wie tussendoor toch wil bellen, moet zijn of haar telefoon ophalen en naar een aparte ruimte gaan die hiervoor ingericht wordt. Na het bellen wordt het mobieltje weer ingenomen. Fans die stiekem opnames maken worden het pand uitgezet.

Op sociale media wordt wisselend gereageerd. Sommige fans vinden het een prima idee, omdat ze zo voor de volle 100% van de show kunnen genieten. Ook zijn mensen blij dat ze niet constant tegen omhoog gestoken armen en telefoons aan hoeven te kijken. Andere fans vinden het belachelijk en denken dat de Queen of Pop bang is dat er materiaal gefilmd wordt van een slecht optreden. De tegenstanders zijn vooral boos dat ze zoveel geld voor een kaartje moeten betalen en ze geen foto’s of filmpjes kunnen maken.

De Madame X-tournee start op 17 september in Brooklyn en eindigt op 4 maart 2020 in Parijs.
