Rebel Heart Tour grumpy in Amsterdam 2nd night – four years ago today

Four years ago today Madonna completed her two-night run at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam with her Rebel Heart Tour.

Unfortunately Madonna was in a grumpy mood and it showed throughout her performance. Madonna had been requesting ‘challenging reviews’ of the previous night written in the Dutch press. Word goes that Madonna fell out with Rocco right before Amsterdam and he flew back to London after the Berlin stop. This might have been one of the reasons she wasn’t in the best of moods.

Dutch press had written things like ‘why doesn’t she just stand on stage and sing?’, ‘why always late on stage?’. During the gypsy section Madonna addressed these reviews and told everyone why we’re in the shithole that we’re in (see video below). This was also one of the few times Madonna failed to post anything on her Instagram for her entire Amsterdam stay, while usually she posted a shout-out to the country she’d just performed in.

A lucky male fan was randomly picked from the crowd and was instructed during La Vie En Rose what to do and how to move. We were told Madonna had specifically requested for a man to be the bitch that night.

BOSTON! MADAME X HEARTS YOU!

As previously announced and per doctor’s orders, Madonna had to cancel her scheduled Madame X tour shows in Boston so she can “come back stronger and better” for the upcoming Philadelphia ones. And since Madame X is… bringing light to dark places, she decided that:

1. All fans who originally purchased a VIP package to one of the cancelled Boston shows will be mailed a copy of the Madame X VIP book!

2. If you had tickets to one of the Boston shows and are able to attend the December 10 one in Philadelphia, please let us know by emailing madamex@madonna.com with your original Boston ticket order confirmation before 4pm on December 8th, using « Madame X, I’m Philly Ready! » as your email’s subject line. You never know what may happen! :)

Hope to see you on the road!

Rebel Heart Tour Amsterdam ‘Sinterklaas avond’ December 5 – four years ago today

Four years ago today on the evening of the Dutch tradition of childrens’ celebration ‘Sinterklaas’, Madonna performed the first of two Rebel Heart shows in the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam.

Madonna didn’t spent as much time in Amsterdam like she did during the MDNA Tour in 2012, where she visited the cinema, went for a boat ride and generally played the tourist along with then boyfriend Brahim. She arrived shortly before the show and kept to herself throughout her stay.

Madonna started the show around 10pm and really got the crowd going from ‘True Blue’ onwards. Sadly a crew member’s boyfriend was chosen to be the unapologetic bitch that evening instead of a fan from the crowd. During the 80’s medley Madonna performed both Secret and Don’t Tell Me.

The Ziggo Dome was absolutely packed! No room at all on the floor to move around, find some space and have a dance.

Cher and Madonna, Anita Baker’s final shows, and holiday home tours in this week’s ‘Things To Do’

Madonna – Madame X Tour
The Met Philadelphia

Saturday, Dec. 7; Sunday, Dec. 8; Tuesday, Dec. 10, Wednesday, Dec. 11, 10:30 p.m.
$95 – $1,715

There are some artists that defy easy characterization. Madonna is one of them. Taking her place among mononymous icons like the aforementioned Cher, Madonna has remained relevant in an industry that favors youth and immediacy rather than experience and output. From her days as a struggling dance artist to international superstardom, Madonna has made groundbreaking strides in a male-dominated industry. She also set the bar for creativity and unbridled self-expression while shaking off controversies along the way. Though she ruled the 80s with hits like “Holiday,” “Borderline” “Vogue” “Like A Prayer,” “Papa Don’t Preach” and more, she doesn’t always get the respect she deserves. But if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani and many others owe her for inspiration. Madonna’s latest release, “Madame X” came out earlier this year. (Note: Phones will be secured via Yondr bags, but will remain with concertgoers and can be accessed if necessary.)

Madonna Makes a Stop in Philadelphia on Her World Tour for Madame X

3158758_01-1.jpg

Since 1983’s self-titled debut, Madonna has played (at least) a dozen different stage roles, including that of a lingerie-clad sex symbol, guitar-strumming cowboy and spiritual songstress. She assumes the role of a globe-trotting superspy on Madame X, her latest album and world tour coming to the Met Dec. 7, 8, 10 and 11. “Madonna is a collage artist who collects and glues together cultural elements, attitudes and environments, and creates a larger work of greater influences,” says Rahsaan Lucas, Philadelphia club DJ and owner-operator of AfroTaino Productions. What makes Madame X so fresh and flavorful is its reach into Latinx sounds, electronic and organic. “Madonna doesn’t take small bites of inspiration; she chomps down by the mouthful. It’s no wonder she found inspiration in the sounds of the Latin and African diaspora,” says Lucas. Madonna will always keep morphing, and she will keep moving to whatever beat she likes. In the spoken word intro of Madame X, she says: “You can never hit a moving target.” If we haven’t learned anything about Madonna over the past 33 years, let us learn that. Tickets from $95, VIP tickets from $750, 858 N. Broad St., 800.653.8000, themetphilly.com

UCLA Archives to Screen Madonna’s Desperately Seeking Susan – December 7

Calling all Madonna fans in the Greater Los Angeles Area! UCLA Film & Television Archives is screening the 80s Film classic Desperately Seeking Susan, starring Rosanna Arquette and Madonna, at the Billy Wilder Theater, located at 10899 Wilshire Blvd., in Los Angeles, Saturday, December 7, starting at 7:30pm (part of a double feature, so possibly playing later than 7:30pm).

For those living under a proverbial rock, Desperately Seeking Susan is a 1985 American comedy-drama film directed by Susan Seidelman. Set in the the filthy streets of New York, the plot involves the interaction between two women – a bored housewife and a trashy drifter – linked by various messages in the personal column of a newspaper. New Jersey housewife Roberta Glass (Rosanna Arquette) spices up her life by reading personal ads, especially a series of them being placed by a mysterious denizen of New York City named Susan (Madonna). When one of Susan’s ads proposes a rendezvous with her suitor (Robert Joy) at Battery Park, Roberta secretly tags along. But when her voyeuristic jape ends in memory loss and Susan’s jacket, it’s a case of mistaken identity with Roberta getting a lot of unwanted attention from some unsavory characters.

The film was Madonna’s first major screen role and also provided early roles for a number of other well-known performers, such as John Turturro, Laurie Metcalf, Aidan Quinn, and Steven Wright. The New York Times named it one of the ten best films of 1985.

The print is provided by UCLA Film & Television Archive; 35mm, color, 103 min.

The Screening is all part of a two-day 80s film festival promoting the book “Make My Day: Movie Culture in the Age of Reagan,” by J. Hoberman.

The book reflects on a presidency inspired by the dominant medium of the 20th century before Twitter, that of Ronald Reagan and the movies. A former Hollywood actor who parlayed a finely-tuned ability to hit his mark into a political career that led from the governorship of California to the White House, Reagan fused spectacle and politics to seize hold of the American popular imagination and consequently shape the world we inhabit now. In his latest riveting cultural history, Make My Day: Movie Culture in the Age of Reagan, J. Hoberman surveys the psychic landscape of Reagan’s America from the child-like nostalgia of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg to the painful reckoning with Vietnam in the violent action fantasies starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. One of our foremost film critics, Hoberman weaves a magisterial account of the era’s transformative events together with incisive readings of its pop cultural touchstones to craft a galvanizing take on Reagan and his legacy. The Archive is hosting Hoberman for both nights with a book signing before each show beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Billy Wilder Theater.

The Desperately Seeking Susan screening is part of two films being shown for the price of one. The other film is Back to the Future, starring Michael J. Fox.

Rebel Heart Tour 2nd night at the O2 in London – 4 years ago today

Four years ago today Madonna played the second and final night of the Rebel Heart Tour in the O2 in London.

During the gypsy section she surprised the crowd by performing ‘Drowned World/Substitute For Love’ and dedicating it to David Collins who passed away. This was the one and only time she performed this particular song during the tour.

The crowd wasn’t as energetic as the first night and Madonna seemed to notice too.

Stella McCartney was tonight’s (quite shy) unapologetic bitch!

Madonna, Troye Sivan and More Celebrities Honor World AIDS Day: ‘Love and Compassion Will Not Die’

Ricardo Gomes
Madonna

Since 1988, every December 1, people the world over commemorate World AIDS Day, a day of somber reflection on the fight against HIV/AIDS and to remember the millions of lives that have already been lost to the disease.

This year, celebrities from the world over made their voices heard thanks to social media, sending out messages of support for those still living with the disease, remembrance for their friends and loved ones who had already died, and anger over the still-inflated price of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and the existing social stigma that exists for those living with HIV.

Pop icon Madonna, who has spent much of her career advocating for those afflicted by HIV/AIDS, took a moment on her social media to remember those who she has personally lost to the disease. Troye Sivan took a different approach, reflecting on the progress that has been made and looking forward to the advancements to come.

Rebel Heart Tour London O2 – 4 years ago today

IF

Four years ago today Madonna played the first of two Rebel Heart Tour shows in the O2 in London.

Neil Gallagher was seated in the front row near the heart stage but had trouble getting access as fans had claimed his spot. Guy Oseary came and saved the day. Fans were pleasantly surprised when ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Something’ started quite early.

Madonna performed a fantastic show and got the crowd going from the start. She addressed World Aids Day in the ‘gypsy’ section and performed ‘Who’s That Girl’.

Graham Norton was a true unapologetic bitch!
