(CNN) – Andy Warhol, Madonna, Debbie Harry, Grace Jones, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Glenn O’Brien, John Lurie — iconic symbols from a bygone New York City. One that was cheaper, grittier and pulsing with new music, art and powerful personalities.
Swiss photographer and director Edo Bertoglio lived in the hot core of the old Big Apple. From 1976 to 1989, he captured New York’s thriving artist community on his Polaroid camera.
Those shots make up the 140 photos in his new book, “New York Polaroids 1976-1989.” It is sort of a “personal diary,” chronicling Bertoglio’s surroundings and friends in intimate and passing moments, much like quick shots taken on phones today.
Bertoglio’s Manhattan was far from the today’s Manhattan, which now has the highest cost-of-living in the United States. Rents were so cheap that artists could work in a restaurant for a few days a month to pay the bills, and then they could spend the rest of their time creating and partying in clubs like Studio 54, Mudd Club and Club 57.

Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are having a great day. Both artists received a slew of MTV VMA Nominations. They are joined by Ed Sheeran, who has also received multiple nominations.
Beyoncé’s video for “7/11” earned nominations for Video of the Year, Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and Best Choreography. The video for “7/11” was described as “savvy superficiality” by the Guardian.
“She’s pop’s Benny Hill! She’s also its savviest businesswoman, and – for all the goofing around – the 7/11 clip is as steely an insistence as ever that she is the world’s biggest pop star.”
Taylor Swift, the only other pop star more popular than Beyoncé now, received multiple nods for the video for “Bad Blood,” which include Video of the Year, Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, Best Collaboration (with Kendrick Lamar), Best Cinematography, and some others.
Surprisingly, Madonna, who is largely responsible for the existence of MTV, was completely snubbed. Though the video for “Ghosttown” is a fan favorite, it is believed that the video for “B***h I’m Madonna” was the one submitted for consideration. The video, which has received more than 60 million views since its release last month, is Madonna’s biggest hit in years.
“B***h I’m Madonna” has received wildly mixed reviews. Her critics consider the video desperate, while her fans, for the most part, think the video is just ironic fun, where Madonna is completely in on the joke. Jason Lipshitz from Billboard thinks Madonna’s latest is one of the best this year.
“Forget the all-star cameos by Katy Perry, Kanye West, Beyonce and Miley Cyrus — no jammed-in cameos can steal the spotlight from Madonna’s unhinged party scene, which includes booty-shaking, shot-taking, a bathtub make-out, and Madge crowd-surfing like a wild teenager.”
The Daily Beast, however, thought Madonna’s video was just plain sad.
“For all of the talk of these megawatt celebrity appearances, Madonna, who filmed the video at the bar at the top of the Standard Hotel, couldn’t even get most of them to show up on location to shoot with her.”
Beyoncé is one of the stars in Madonna’s video. Last year, not only did Beyoncé earn the Video Vanguard Award, but she performed a medley of hits and was widely praised for her performance. MTV thought Beyoncé’s video was flawless.
“On Sunday night (August 25), she took viewers on an emotional journey with a well-orchestrated medley from her recent, self-titled album, that ended with tears as she accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award from her husband, Jay-Z,” noted the review.
The 2015 MTV VMAs will be hosted by Miley Cyrus. However, it’s quite possible that Beyoncé will be the one to truly rule the show.

A gay sexual health charity has recorded a raunchy Madonna parody – and all in the name of safer sex.
Impulse Los Angeles, which is dedicated to promoting healthier sexual lifestyles among gay men, recorded a send-up of the gay icon’s latest single, ‘Bitch, I’m Madonna’.
The parody, titled ‘Bitch, I’m a Condom’ is an attempt to promote the use of condoms among gays – and it does it in style.
“Collaborating with the voices of various LGBT influencers like, Manila Luzon, Pandora Boxx, Jai Rodriguez, Pablo Hernandez & Impulse LA, we strive to promote the message of safer sex practices.”
“When we go off we can’t be tamed, just be you, there ain’t no shame, plus or minus we’re all the same, and I wear a condom.”
Madonna recently stirred controversy – by advertising her album with a picture of a Muslim man kissing a Jewish man.
She recently joined Grindr to chat to a number of fans about her new album.
The singer has previously claimed that gay rights are “way more advanced” than women’s rights.

Madonna today announced that Diplo will be the opening act for the launch of her highly-anticipated Rebel Heart World Tour on September 9th and 10th at Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.
Madonna said, “To have Diplo open for me is my dream come true. Montreal is about to TURN UP!!!! We Go Hard or We Go Home!”
Diplo is one of the most dynamic forces in music today. This summer two of his projects are soaring up Top 15: Major Lazer’s “Lean On” and Jack Ü’s “Where Are Ü Now” with Skrillex and Justin Bieber. Always outspoken about his musical talent, Madonna teamed with Diplo on the writing and recording of her critically acclaimed 13th studio album, Rebel Heart. With Madonna, Diplo produced and co-wrote the songs “Living For Love,” “Bitch I’m Madonna,” “Unapologetic Bitch,” “Veni Vidi Vici” and co-wrote “Graffiti Heart” (from the Super Deluxe Album).

The final countdown is on for the publication of the long-awaited, unauthorized mega-book:
ENCYCLOPEDIA MADONNICA 20
by Matthew Rettenmund
Madonna from A to Z, from birth to “Bitch I’m Madonna.” Every aspect of Madonna’s life and career is covered with respect, love, humor … and the occasional spanky. At times, you will feel like this book contains more info on Madonna than the Internet does, and there are definitely things in here that Madonna has forgotten about herself!
The book includes never-before-seen photos, images of rare collectibles, classic portraits and red-carpet poses, original interviews with people who’ve worked with Madonna + over 80 one-word Madonna descriptions contributed by stars such as Carol Burnett, Liza Minnelli, Andy Cohen, Olivia Newton-John and many more!
As much of a visual treat as it is, the book is chiefly a serious (and seriously funny) assessment of all things Madonna. As such, it contains over 420,000 words on the woman who kindly requests that you not hang your shit on her, thanks.
Full-color, approximately 600 pages, quality paperback.
Limited Edition: 500 copies only. 100 copies are left for sale as of today. Unique cover + unique 16-page photo feature + signed/numbered bookplate. Buy now until they’re gone. Books will be shipped once printed, hopefully in the month of August*, with book plates to follow, just as Madonna is blowing out 57 candles and preparing to blow us away with her Rebel Heart Tour.
Regular Edition: Goes on sale at Amazon very soon—hopefully in August.

Madonna says folks shouldn’t be too put off over her recent comments about growing up in Rochester Hills.
“I appreciate my provincial upbringing,” the Michigan-born pop culture icon explained by phone Friday, June 17, from her home in New York City. She’s preparing for her Rebel Heart Tour, which begins Sept. 9 in Montreal and will bring Madonna back home on Oct. 1 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
The Bay City-born Madonna (nee Ciccone) — who was raised in Pontiac and Rochester Hills, graduating from Rochester Adams High School — ruffled local feathers when she referred to the “basic, provincial-thinking people” of her hometown during a March interview with Howard Stern on SiriusXM satellite radio. The remark even prompted an open letter from Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett defending the area.
Madonna, 56, who studied dance for one semester at the University of Michigan before moving to New York, says she hasn’t read Barnett’s letter but expressed a bit more pride about her roots on Friday.
“To me it’s really important that I came from the Midwest,” she explained, “with my father and people that I was surrounded with, very strong work ethic and my practical approach to work, and not a lot of frills.
“I don’t think I would be as creative as I am if I’d grown up surrounded by everything at my fingertips. The fact that I came from a small town in the Midwest has a lot to do with the kind of open notebook that I had to start my journey of creativity.”
That journey has continued with “Rebel Heart,” Madonna’s 13th studio album — which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard charts in March — and will take its next step with the tour, which she promised will be one of her characteristically theatrical spectacles, featuring songs from throughout her 32-year Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recording career, with plenty of challenging choreography and provocative imagery.
“I’m still working my way through the set list,” said Madonna, who’s working on the show with a team of creative directors, choreographers and costume designers. “The name of the tour, Rebel Heart, starts the party and then I think, ‘What’s a strong beginning? What’s the statement I want to make?’ and then we go on a journey from there.”
The theme of the show, she added, will be “romance.”
“Love. Living for love. Being a rebel heart. Living for love. They’re all kind of intertwined, you know — rising above, believing in your dreams, overcoming heartbreak, things like that,” Madonna said. “You know, the simple things in life.”
And while fans wonder if she can still perform at the level she has in the past, Madonna, whose daughter, Lourdes, begins her second year at U-M this fall, said they won’t be disappointed.
“I have a very disciplined life,” she said. “I don’t do a lot of socializing. My life revolves around my show and my children and trying to live a very healthy lifestyle. The only thing I’m lacking right now is sleep — as always.”
Tickets for Madonna’s Joe Louis Arena concert, priced $53-$158, are on sale. Visitolympiaentertainment.com for details.

Dutch DJ Sander Kleinenberg remixed the song Bitch, I’m Madonna to which he’s very proud of. “It’s an honour to work for such a legendary lady”, the musician told RTL Boulevard on Wednesday.
Madonna is planning to use the remixes Kleinenberg did for her in her performances. “At one time I was asked to make some adjustments as M was digging it so much”.
The pressure was intense to deliver. But he worked on it, and it resulted in this remix. The song is doing very well in the charts.
