Madonna’s 50 Greatest Songs

Our list of the Madonna‘s 50 greatest songs is a fitting tribute to the 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, whose gift to songwriting is matched only by her skill for finding the right partners to unlock her creativity: Prince, William Orbit, Diplo, Justin Timberlake and more. The stories behind Madonna’s songs reveal the evolution of the only artist in the world who’s equally at home in the club, in the church and on the catwalk; there are psychosexual dramas, disco reveries, tear-jerking ballads and pop songs that unite the globe – all by an artist who has never risked making the same album twice. “I don’t think about my old stuff,” she told Rolling Stone in 2015. “I just move forward.” Madonna is as restless as she is relentlessly imaginative – and we just can’t look away.

Spotted in Amsterdam: Madonna inspired custom made jacket

We spotted this absolutely unique jacket in a fashion store in Amsterdam, completely inspired by the Bitch I’m Madonna video and Rebel Heart era. Although the fit of the jacket reminds us a lot of the Who’s That Girl tour days (and the U can Dance Campbell’s tourjacket) it is absolute fashion of today.

From ‘Bitch I’m Madonna’ on the collar to Madonna’s name based on the Confessions On A Dance Floor logo and a big giant M on the back, it is 100% fabulous!

Strike A Pose : Interview With Carlton Wilborn

Carl
Back in 1990 Madonna took stardom to dizzy heights no star had experienced before. She had a massive number one hit on her hands (Vogue), was in a hit film (Dick Tracy) and embarked on a World Tour that would have the whole world talking!

The Blond Ambition Tour broke boundaries and the box office, it was the hottest ticket of the year. And if you wasn’t lucky enough to get a ticket, the tour was made into a rockumentary which featured Madonna on stage, on the road and in bed with Madonna. The film (Truth or Dare/In Bed With Madonna) focused on the relationships the superstar had with those closest to her especially the seven male dancers who featured heavily in the film.

Truth or Dare has become something of a classic, probably the first venture into reality TV. The dancers that appeared in it became stars in their own right and attracted a fan base of their own. Now twenty five years later ‘Strike a Pose’ a feature documentary from Ester Gould and Reijer Zwaan, catches up with six of the dancers and exposes the highs and the lows of life after Madonna.

Very few people got as close to Madonna as Carlton Wilborn. He toured twice with the superstar, appeared in the iconic Vogue video and had his life exposed to the universe in Truth or Dare. We caught up with Carlton shortly after the ‘Strike A Pose’ premier in Berlin.

W&W: Hi Carlton, we can’t remember a time when a pop stars arrival in the UK caused as much controversy as Madonna did when she arrived in London for the Blond Ambition Tour, what are your memories of being in London at that time and playing Wembley Stadium ?

Carlton: It was the largest venue we performed in, so that was amazing. Plus, I got to have dinner (Indian food) with Daniel Day Lewis, and he gave me some great advice regarding my acting career. so that totally Rocked!

W&W: That summer Vogue was riding high at the top of the charts, were you familiar with vogueing before you guys brought it mainstream?

Carlton: No I wasn’t. I don’t think I had even heard of it before the audition.

W&W: Was there a realisation while on tour that you were creating something unique and special, did you know that the tour, the film would have the everlasting impact that it’s had?

Carlton: No, I didn’t have a sense of the impact we were making. And the fact that it’s 25 years later, and so many people are interested, it is truly amazing and an honor.

Is Madonna Already Recording a ‘Rebel Heart’ Follow Up?

It’s been just over a year now since Madonna (officially) released Rebel Heart, her leak-prone thirteenth studio album which supplied us with #unapologetic anthems like “Living For Love,” “Ghosttown” and, of course, “Bitch I’m Madonna.”

But based on a news report from Ghana, the Queen of Pop might already be laying the groundwork for a follow-up record.

According to 3News, the country’s own Qweci, a R&B singer formerly known as Ded Buddy, co-wrote a track with Madonna while in America, allegedly crafted by a producer on her last album.

“Back in the States, I co-wrote a song for American songstress Madonna which is not yet released…I wrote the song so it’s one of the songs which is actually being pushed to her right now to be released. I co-produced, co-arranged and stuff for Madonna’s album,” he told the news service in a story this week.

While the artist in question seems like a fairly obscure collaborator pick on Madge’s behalf — his latest activity appears to be an African language cover of Justin Bieber‘s “Love Yourself” on his YouTube — there might actually be something to this rumor.

After all, the True Blue superstar has spent the past two weeks in Africa with her children, getting hands-on with relief efforts in Kenya and meeting with political leaders, as well as visiting Malawi, where she established her Raising Malawi non-profit organization.

Is it possible that Madonna’s African outreach is now extending to her musical output? Could she possibly be releasing music to fundraise for her various causes? When it comes to Madonna, anything’s possible — just watch that Instagram feed very closely.

Madonna closed out her Rebel Heart Tour in Sydney on March 20, extending her reign as the highest grossing touring solo artist in Billboard history.

Madonna takes adopted children on visit home to Malawi

Pop diva Madonna and her two adopted Malawian children have flown into the impoverished southern African nation to inspect a hospital project she is funding there, her charity Raising Malawi said Friday.

It is the first time in nearly two years that Madonna has visited the country, where she has at times been embroiled in controversy after her adoption of David Banda in 2006 and Mercy James in 2009.

She is reportedly the biggest individual donor to children’s projects such as orphanages in Malawi, which is ranked by the UN Human Development Index as one of the world’s 20 least developed countries.

Her latest project is a 50-bed surgical unit for children at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in the commercial capital Blantyre, complete with three operating theatres, a day clinic and the country’s first paediatric intensive care unit.

“The facility being funded by Madonna will greatly assist us because it will be particularly equipped for children’s surgery,” paediatric specialist Eric Borgstein told AFP.

Borgstein, who is a partner in Raising Malawi and one of just three paediatric surgeons in the country, said the unit would double the hospital’s capacity for surgery on children.

The current intensive care unit of the poorly-equipped hospital, which was built in 1958 and serves the 600,000 population in Blantyre, has just four beds.

Madonna, who has reportedly rented the entire upmarket Kumbali Country Lodge near the capital Lilongwe to ensure her privacy, will visit the project on Sunday.

It is due to be completed by the end of the year.

Madonna has in the past said Malawi was “special because that’s where I adopted my two children”.

But her enthusiasm hasn’t always been reciprocated.

She was stripped of her VIP status by former president Joyce Banda in 2013 amid controversy over the cancellation of plans for a $15 million academy for girls when it became mired in allegations of mismanagement.

Banda’s government accused Madonna of being “uncouth” and of bullying state officials, saying she “wants Malawi to be forever chained to the obligation of gratitude” for having adopted two Malawian children.

But Banda was ousted in 2014 elections and the new president, Peter Mutharika, moved to repair relations, saying “my government has always been grateful for the passion Madonna has for this country”.
