It’s been just over a year now since Madonna (officially) released Rebel Heart, her leak-prone thirteenth studio album which supplied us with #unapologetic anthems like “Living For Love,” “Ghosttown” and, of course, “Bitch I’m Madonna.”
But based on a news report from Ghana, the Queen of Pop might already be laying the groundwork for a follow-up record.
According to 3News, the country’s own Qweci, a R&B singer formerly known as Ded Buddy, co-wrote a track with Madonna while in America, allegedly crafted by a producer on her last album.
“Back in the States, I co-wrote a song for American songstress Madonna which is not yet released…I wrote the song so it’s one of the songs which is actually being pushed to her right now to be released. I co-produced, co-arranged and stuff for Madonna’s album,” he told the news service in a story this week.
While the artist in question seems like a fairly obscure collaborator pick on Madge’s behalf — his latest activity appears to be an African language cover of Justin Bieber‘s “Love Yourself” on his YouTube — there might actually be something to this rumor.
After all, the True Blue superstar has spent the past two weeks in Africa with her children, getting hands-on with relief efforts in Kenya and meeting with political leaders, as well as visiting Malawi, where she established her Raising Malawi non-profit organization.
Is it possible that Madonna’s African outreach is now extending to her musical output? Could she possibly be releasing music to fundraise for her various causes? When it comes to Madonna, anything’s possible — just watch that Instagram feed very closely.
Madonna closed out her Rebel Heart Tour in Sydney on March 20, extending her reign as the highest grossing touring solo artist in Billboard history.

Pop diva Madonna and her two adopted Malawian children have flown into the impoverished southern African nation to inspect a hospital project she is funding there, her charity Raising Malawi said Friday.
It is the first time in nearly two years that Madonna has visited the country, where she has at times been embroiled in controversy after her adoption of David Banda in 2006 and Mercy James in 2009.
She is reportedly the biggest individual donor to children’s projects such as orphanages in Malawi, which is ranked by the UN Human Development Index as one of the world’s 20 least developed countries.

Her latest project is a 50-bed surgical unit for children at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in the commercial capital Blantyre, complete with three operating theatres, a day clinic and the country’s first paediatric intensive care unit.
“The facility being funded by Madonna will greatly assist us because it will be particularly equipped for children’s surgery,” paediatric specialist Eric Borgstein told AFP.
Borgstein, who is a partner in Raising Malawi and one of just three paediatric surgeons in the country, said the unit would double the hospital’s capacity for surgery on children.
The current intensive care unit of the poorly-equipped hospital, which was built in 1958 and serves the 600,000 population in Blantyre, has just four beds.
Madonna, who has reportedly rented the entire upmarket Kumbali Country Lodge near the capital Lilongwe to ensure her privacy, will visit the project on Sunday.
It is due to be completed by the end of the year.
Madonna has in the past said Malawi was “special because that’s where I adopted my two children”.
But her enthusiasm hasn’t always been reciprocated.
She was stripped of her VIP status by former president Joyce Banda in 2013 amid controversy over the cancellation of plans for a $15 million academy for girls when it became mired in allegations of mismanagement.
Banda’s government accused Madonna of being “uncouth” and of bullying state officials, saying she “wants Malawi to be forever chained to the obligation of gratitude” for having adopted two Malawian children.
But Banda was ousted in 2014 elections and the new president, Peter Mutharika, moved to repair relations, saying “my government has always been grateful for the passion Madonna has for this country”.

Thirty years ago today,Madonna released her third studio album, True Blue, on Sire Records. One of the best-selling albums of all time, True Blue is RIAA-certified 7x platinum with seven million copies sold in the U.S. and an estimated 25 million copies sold worldwide. It was the world’s top-selling album in 1986, reaching No. 1 in a then record-breaking 28 countries around the world, as well as the best-selling album of the ’80s by a female artist. In the U.S., True Blue hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 on August 16th, 1986, and remained at No. 1 for five consecutive weeks, spending 82 weeks on the chart.
True Blue spawned five Top 5 singles, “True Blue,” “La Isla Bonita,” “Live to Tell,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” and “Open Your Heart,” the latter three all peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also features fan favorite “Where’s the Party”.
Madonna co-wrote and co-produced the entirety of True Blue with Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard. She has said that the album deals with her view of love and was an “unabashed valentine” to her then husband Sean Penn. In his AllMusic Review, critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that “True Blue is the album where Madonna truly became Madonna the Superstar — the endlessly ambitious, fearlessly provocative entertainer that knew how to outrage, spark debates, get good reviews — and make good music while she’s at it.” Indeed, the album’s second single, “Papa Don’t Preach” sparked outrage for its themes of pregnancy and abortion, while the peep-show theme for “Open Your Heart” also became a lightning rod for a discussion about the “male gaze” and voyeurism.
Madonna was honored with the Video Vanguard Award at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards, the same year True Blue was released, becoming the first female artist to receive the award.
Madonna now holds the record for the “Top Grossing Touring Solo Artist” in the history of Billboard Boxscore with over $1.31 billion in ticket sales sold over the course of her career.
Released on June 30th, 1986, today marks the 30th anniversary of Madonna’s third studio album, True Blue. At the time, the Material Girl was in love: She’d married Sean Penn the year before, and she said she named the song and the album it appeared on after a favorite expression of Penn’s.
The album cover featured a blonde bombshell photo by Herb Ritts, and it spelled the next era for her image. No longer wearing the lace, rosaries and rubber jewelry that made her a fashion trendsetter, she was now going for old Hollywood glamour. The biggest hit from True Blue may have been the second single released, “Papa Don’t Preach,” but “True Blue,” the third single, received quite a bit of promotion.
MTV called on fans to create videos for the song, and then chose five finalists, playing nothing but “True Blue” video entries repeatedly for the entire day. The winners were Angel Garcia and Cliff Guest, who said they spent under $1,000 to make the video (they received $25,000 prize), and it follows the story of teenagers in love, shot in sepia tone, a style that fits with the 1950s doo-wop vibe of the track.
By the end of the Eighties, Madge would divorce Penn and stop performing it in concert, but she still looked back on it fondly. In 1998, when an interviewer asked her what the words “true blue” reminded her of, she answered, “Romance.”

Madonna’s feature-length rockumentary Truth or Dare spotlighted many of the Queen of Pop’s sexy song-and-dance numbers from her 1990 Blond Ambition Tour. But it was what director Alek Keshishian captured offstage that truly curled mainstream America’s toes and almost garnered the film an X rating. For the seven male dancers — six gay and one straight — that made up Madonna’s dance troupe, however, certain truths were still too shocking to reveal. It took 25 years, but today they’re ready to tell all in a new documentary about the truths behind Truth or Dare, entitled Strike a Pose.
SF Weekly caught up with the band of “brothers,” Luis Camacho, Salim Gauwloos, Kevin Stea, Carlton Wilborn, and Oliver Crumes III, between a Macy’s in-store appearance and their film’s Frameline premiere on June 25, about the secrets that they didn’t dare expose.
There’s a pink elephant in the room that I can no longer ignore. Where is your fellow dancer Jose Gutierez?
Salim Gauwloos: He has some work in New York, so he couldn’t be here.
Switching gears, when Madonna first decided to document her Blond Ambition Tour, did she have a specific purpose in mind outside of just showcasing life on the road? Was she pushing an alternate view of the gay community?
Carlton Wilborn: There was never a conversation with her in regards to the purpose of that particular tour at all. All that we knew was that at some point she wanted to film the life that we were having when we were on the road, and it was just an organic catching of all of who we were and what our experience was.
Kevin Stea: I think she knew very well that she was pulling from the gay nightclub scene in New York and presenting that. Also, her friend world was filled with gay people, and her experience of gay people is that we are normal, friends, human, and the people around you.
It was also a collaborative thing going on with her and Alek Keshishian. Alek is also gay, and I think it was within their conversations. You can see his vision of the movie and his message just as much as hers, so I think he probably influences a lot of that.
One thing that’s certain, according to statements made in Truth or Dare and Strike a Pose, is that the late Gabriel Trupin was Madonna’s favorite dancer. Why?
CW: He was all of our favorites. He was the favorite child.
Oliver, you were not everyone’s favorite off the bat. In Truth or Dare you come off as very homophobic, yet today you embrace the gay community wholeheartedly. What was the turning point for you?
Oliver Crumes III: The day of the Vogue photo shoot. It opened my eyes up. I kind of adjusted, but I didn’t really get to know everybody. We began rehearsing before the “Vogue” video, and it took time. We weren’t close in the beginning, but as the tour went on, I learned everything about everybody.
So was your claim in Truth or Dare that your fellow dancers were all after you true or not?
OC: No. But anyway, I love them. I found out the reason that they are who they are. I found out about their whole lives, and from then on, I went from being ignorant to being mature about it. They turned my life around.
SG: He was also young, and imagine being stuck in a room for one year with six queens.
OC: It was hard, but they made me stronger.
