Madonna to celebrate 60th birthday with Malawi fundraiser

NEW YORK (AP) — Madonna is celebrating her upcoming 60th birthday with a fundraiser for orphans and children in Malawi.

The singer tells The Associated Press she’s teaming with Facebook for the fundraiser, which runs from Monday through August 31. Fans can donate directly to Madonna’s Facebook page or start their own fundraiser on the social media site to raise money for the singer’s campaign.

The proceeds will benefit her Raising Malawi foundation, and global payments company Ripple said it would match all of the donations.

Madonna will turn 60 on Aug. 16.

Madonna, who adopted four children from Malawi, founded Raising Malawi in 2006 to address the poverty and hardship endured by Malawi’s orphans and vulnerable children. She launched a children’s wing at a hospital in Malawi last year.

EXCLUSIVE: Madonna on Family Life in Portugal for Vogue Italia

Madonna photographed for the August issue of Vogue Italia

MILAN — Madonna, soccer mom?

This is the latest transformation of the artist, whose life in Lisbon takes center stage in the August issue of Vogue Italia, with an interview focused on her children, her passion for music and horses, as well as the projects for her charity Raising Malawi, flanked by a fashion shoot photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

The magazine initially planned to mark Madonna’s 60th birthday in August with a celebration of her career and accomplishments, but it turned out she had a very different plan. “She doesn’t want to talk about the past,” Vogue Italia creative director Giovanni Bianco told WWD in an exclusive interview with editor in chief Emanuele Farneti.

Bianco is an important link with Madonna, as he has worked for 12 years with her on four CD covers, several tours and countless editorials.

“She is in an incredibly hard worker, I have learned so much from her intensity and dedication, but I think there is a distinction between her popular image and the day-by-day, normal person,” observed Bianco. “In this shoot, you see more of her maternal side, she is fascinating with her children and friends – she is an example.”

Madonna is living in Portugal with four of her six children: David Banda, 12; Mercy James, 12, and the twins Stella and Estere, 5. “She is very happy and romantic at the moment, and you can see it in the photos, where she poses with all that she loves the most,” said Bianco.

The shoot is called “Just one Day out of Life,” and Madonna on the two available covers and posters wears all-black Saint Laurent looks, posing at the Herdade do Peru estate, which dates back to the 18th century, and is located in the national Park of Arrábida, about 19 miles from Lisbon.

“She is a friend but I am also a fan, and my thoughts went straight to the collectible poster,” said Bianco gleefully. On both covers, Madonna strikes graphic and bold poses, either lying on one side on the grass, or looking up at the cloudy skies.

Madonna is also photographed out on the streets in Lisbon and at her favorite Tejo bar, where she regularly goes to listen to Portuguese and African music. “She knows the musicians there, it’s like a laboratory, there’s music from Cabo Verde and she loves fado [a Lisbon-based music genre],” said Bianco. Madonna is working on her next album and it’s safe to say that this music will infuse her work, added Farneti.

Designer brands included in the shoot range from Dsquared2, Dior, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana to Fendi, Rochas, Alberta Ferretti, Miu Miu, Blumarine and Peter Dundas, among others.

This being Madonna, “she basically did her own styling,” Bianco admitted.

The interview by Xerxes Cook is accompanied by stories and anecdotes on Madonna by the likes of Alessandro Michele, Donatella Versace, Riccardo Tisci, Kate Moss, Stella McCartney, her go-to stylist Arianne Phillips, Jean Paul Gaultier and Cristiano Ronaldo, to name a few.

The issue hits newsstands on August 3.

Madonna Chooses Family Over Tour to Celebrate 60th Birthday!

She’s set to celebrate her 60th birthday after dominating the music industry for nearly four decades.

And Madonna has reportedly ruled out plans for a tour as she prepares to mark her special day with a lavish bash in Portugal with her family, according to The Mirror.

Sources told the publication that the Queen of Pop, 59, is ‘enjoying having time off and winding down’ as she focuses on her children.

Insisting that the musician – who wrapped up her Rebel Heart Tour in 2016 – is not retiring, the insider added: ‘She is revelling in a slower pace of life and focusing on her children. That’s more important to her right now.’

Madonna in Malawi to Advocate for Youth Education and Healthcare – press release

LOS ANGELES, July 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Madonna is currently visiting Malawi, where she has worked since 2006 with her charitable organization, Raising Malawi. The musician and philanthropist is marking the first anniversary of the Mercy James Centre for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care, an ambitious project undertaken by Raising Malawi to improve specialized paediatric healthcare in Malawi.  Located on the campus of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) – the largest referral hospital in the country – the Mercy James Centre includes Malawi’s first paediatric intensive care unit, three operating theatres dedicated to surgery in children, a day clinic, and 50-bed ward.

“Malawi is a second home for me and my family, and every time we come here is a homecoming.  It’s a thrill to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Mercy James Centre, its talented staff, and the committed partners who have worked with Raising Malawi to make this effort a success,” said Madonna. “Our achievements this past year have exceeded our expectations, and we will continue with our mission to better serve the children of this country.”

Raising Malawi funded the Mercy James Centre for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care (MJC) to provide Malawi’s youth with the best medical care possible. Since opening July 11, 2018, the talented staff of Mercy James Centre have:

  • Performed 1,690 paediatric surgeries – more than double the annual average before the Mercy James Centre
  • Admitted nearly 300 patients into the paediatric ICU
  • Seen 2,300 patients in the outpatient clinic
  • Admitted nearly 1,500 patients into the ward

The MJC is setting a new standard of paediatric surgical and intensive care in the region. Highlights from year one include Malawi’s first successful operation of conjoined twins. A team of 20+ doctors, nurses and anesthesia staff, led by long-time Raising Malawi partner Dr. Eric Borgstein, successfully separated two baby boys. The effort was a testament to spirit of collaboration and excellence that is imbedded in the culture of Mercy James Centre.

“We are able to tackle cases that we never could have done in the past. Because of the Mercy James Centre, we are saving more children’s lives, particularly those with complex medical issues. The support of Madonna and Raising Malawi has transformed paediatric surgical and intensive care in Malawi,” said Dr. Borgstein.

In addition to increasing paediatric surgical capacity, the Mercy James Centre is growing into its role as a training center of excellence. It houses the sole paediatric surgery training program in Malawi, supported by Raising Malawi. Partners like Physicians for Peace and Oslo University Hospital drive bedside education in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU), the first PICU in Malawi.

Madonna is also a global leader in promoting education for the world’s most vulnerable children. In 2012, she launched a partnership between her foundation, Raising Malawi, and the global nonprofit buildOn. Today, Madonna has served nearly 10,000 Malawian students – fulfilling her commitment to making learning and school accessible to Malawian youth. During her latest trip, Madonna traveled to Northeast Kasungu Province to officially open four primary schools constructed with buildOn – in total Raising Malawi has built 14 schools in rural Malawi. As a part of the partnership, Raising Malawi and buildOn have educated community members about the importance of girls’ education, and as result, all schools have gender-parity (equal numbers of girls and boys enrolled).

Madonna concluded the trip with a meeting with His Excellency President Arthur Peter Mutharika, who appointed her Malawi’s Goodwill Ambassador for Child Welfare in 2014.

‘Madonna: Rebel Heart Tour’ On Showtime Affirms Madonna’s Place As America’s Aphrodite

Oh Madonna Louise Ciccone, daughter of the Midwest, graduate of the Lower East Side, now living in…who knows…Paris? London? Abu Dhabi? Silverlake? It matters not, she is our American Aphrodite, embodying our many sexual contradictions, our sanctimonious morality and our most depraved fantasies, our love of religious iconography and hardcore pornography. If she doesn’t command the glare of the spotlight as she once did, if the national temperature now favors intolerance and anger over freedom and joy, she still reigns over this land where women become superstars by sharing nude photos of themselves on social media and we debate whether or not the President of The United States likes to watch prostitutes urinate on each other.

Now almost 40 years into her career, having buried most of her competition and watched usurpers struggle and falter, Madge could spend the rest of her life selling out arenas performing nothing but her ‘80s hits if she were so inclined. Like Elvis Presley, people are drawn to her divine star power like mosquitoes to a bug zapper. That she still puts great effort into creating new music and imagining how to present it on tour speaks to her artistry and work ethic. The 2017 concert film, Madonna: Rebel Heart Tour, shows the Material Girl hasn’t lost any steps now that she’s more a grande dame and is currently available for streaming on Showtime.

Filmed on the tour for the 2015 album of the same name, we see a video pre-roll where Madonna says, “Medieval warrior bitch goddess…that’s what I’m going for.” Sure enough, the stage if filled with dancers screaming their heads off and bearing feudal arms. Madonna’s version of feminism isn’t something you study in the classroom of a liberal arts college, but rather, she presents a confrontational sexuality, the right to be as sexy and as powerful as she wants to be, wherever and however she wants; if that gets complicated, then so be it.  “I have tits and ass,” the video continues, as she writhes against a chain-link fence, “but I still want to start a revolution.” As if to capture her contradictory impulses, to titillate and liberate, she is then introduced via video by convicted rapist Mike Tyson before descending from a spear-laden elevator in a massive red kimono to perform “Iconic,” Rebel Heart’s lead single.

HOW MADONNA DEFINED POP CULTURE

Singing about abortion. Writhing on a cross. Publishing her sexual fantasies. Even those cone bras. Madonna seems to have done so much in her life that it’s hard to grasp that she’s a real person, instead of the lofty icon her name suggests.

As the singer turns 60, the desire to take stock of her enormous cultural impact seems Herculean. That’s because her body of work is so vast, spanning four decades and countless changes in sound, style and creative direction.

Yet despite her chameleon instincts, she’s always remained resolutely herself—a willfully provocative presence in an industry which can so easily smother its stars into blandness. As Madonna herself said: “A lot of people are afraid to say what they want. That’s why they don’t get what they want.”

Her unapologetic, in-control attitude has been a source of inspiration for women and LGBTQ fans, who watched her carve her own space out in popular culture, and play with gender conventions in a way that was both witty and provocative.

Her influence is still felt in contemporary pop culture: Think Beyonce’s highly-controlled personas, Miley Cyrus’s sexual shock tactics, Cardi B’s uncensored New York brashness.

This toughness has allowed her to continue through moments which might have wiped out lesser popstars. She’s certainly had a few missteps, such as her disastrous starring role in the 2002 rom-com Swept Away and some dodgy forays into culture-as-costume.

But her refusal to either slow down or tone down, even in the face of sneers that she’s too old to be leaping around in revealing outfits, proves she’s still taking on taboos—this time, it’s the assumption that women should fade into the background as they age.

We’ve charted Madonna’s career, picking out the moments she truly defined the zeitgeist. From pissing off the Pope to kissing Britney, these are the Queen of Pop’s most groundbreaking moments.

Sire Records Co-Founder Seymour Stein Leaving Warner Music Group After Four Decades

Sire Records co-founder Seymour Stein — who signed and released albums by Madonna, the Ramones, Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, the Smiths, the Pretenders, and many others — will be leaving Warner Music Group after four decades with the company, it was announced Wednesday. The announcement was made in tandem with Stein receiving the Recording Academy’s Trustees Award on Saturday night at the organization’s Special Merit Awards ceremony and tribute concert in Los Angeles. Last year, Rani Hancock was named president of Sire, which was acquired by Warner in 1978, and will helm the label going forward.

“I’ve enjoyed much of my time at Warner’s, but in truth I long for my indie roots and the greater independence that I experienced back in the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s,” Stein (pictured above with David Byrne and Madonna) said in making the announcement. “So the time has come to move on to the next phase of my career, leaving Sire in the hands of Rani Hancock, whom I sincerely wish all the luck in the world. I’m very proud that Sire was named the #15 label of the past 100 years in a major poll conducted by Variety earlier this year. I trust that it will continue to be a place where great songs and great artists will live for many years to come.”

“Rest assured, I intend to remain active, and I’ll be back in action again soon. I’m looking forward to the future and continuing to develop new artists in the music business that I love so much.”

The Trustees Award was presented to Stein by singer and author Henry Rollins, who said, “Seymour is the ultimate visionary indie, hearts & minds music executive of all time. His unquenchable passion has made the world a better, more open, free and cool place for almost six decades… Seymour, thank you for being the kind of record man that makes music history.” Past recipients have included legendary music executives such as Ahmet Ertegun, Nesuhi Ertegun, Jac Holzman, Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin, Mo Ostin, Chris Blackwell, Clive Davis, and many others.
