Her Madgesty is celebrating her 60th birthday this month so we’re dedicating August to the Queen of Pop. Today we highlight five of her most memorable live performances.
At 2003’s MTV Awards, the crowd looked on with anticipation as two flower girls began scattering petals on stage before a giant wedding cake was revealed by a rising curtain. The unmistakable opening bars of Like A Virgin blared from the speakers and a veiled bride stood atop the cake and sang ‘I made it through the wilderness’. If the vocals didn’t give the game away, the crowd went wild when the bride lifted her veil to reveal it was Britney Spears. When the song reached the chorus section, a second veiled bride appeared on stage and began singing in that deep throaty power voice that could only belong to Christina Aguilera. That’s right, the two ex-Mouseketeers on stage together – unbelievable in itself! As if this couldn’t get any more surprising the song stops and the wedding march plays loud. If the crowd weren’t hyped enough, they were about to get much crazier. Madonna slowly rises out of the wedding cake dressed in her version of black top and tails. She belts out the opening to her hit Hollywood before descending the stairs to meet her two brides for a dance routine Strictly would be proud of. Just when we think we’ve seen it all Madonna kisses both brides in turn before welcoming Missy Elliott to the stage. It doesn’t get much better than this for pop lovers!
Madonna proved she was the Queen of Pop as she was carried onto the pitch on an Eygptian inspired throne pulled by lots of hunky centurions at the 2012 Superbowl Halftime Show. She belted out a medley of hits starting with Vogue before moving on to Music complete with LMFAO and including Party Rock Anthem and Sexy and I Know It elements. She was then joined by MIA and Nicki Minaj for the first live performance of Give Me All Your Luvin. Surprisingly it was MIA and not Madonna for once, that caused the controversy by flicking the bird. Open Your Heart, Express Yourself and Like A Prayer were all represented with Cee-Lo joining Madge on the stage too.
The above performance with Christina, Britney and Missy wasn’t the first time Madonna owned the MTV Awards. Back in 1990 she took to the stage donned in Marie Antoinette style dress, complete with wig and painted face. She performed a choreographed dance routine with some fun knickerbocker flashing moments to the single Vogue. Her obvious miming only added to the throwback theatre feel of the performance. Not a Black Adder in sight!
Madonna gave an emotional performance of her track You Must Love Me at the 69h annual Academy Awards in 1997. The song was the only new track written for the film adaptation of Evita, in which Madonna starred as Eva Perón. In stark contrast to the other performances here, this is Madonna simply showing her vocal prowess. She had singing lessons for the film to train her voice to the more musical theatre style needed. A beautiful performance.
This performance is perhaps her most infamous when a wardrobe malfunction with a cape that wouldn’t unfasten, sent Madonna tumbling. We’ve included it in our top 5 as we have so much respect for how Madonna didn’t let a little thing like being pulled down a small flight of stairs, get in the way of her performance. We fear many younger performers would have fled the stage in tears but as Jinx Monsoon might say it was all “water off a duck’s back” for Madonna. It was a show-stealing performance whichever way you look at it. Bow down bitches!

People say I’m controversial,” Madonna, who turned 60 on August 16, told an audience of music-industry peers in 2016. “But I think the most controversial thing I have ever done is to stick around.” Sexism was the demon that haunted Madonna’s early career, but for two decades—maybe longer—it’s had an equally unwelcome sibling: ageism.
Madonna was a pioneer of welding her voice to her image, and in a culture consumed with critiquing how women look, and controlling how they use their bodies, she’s been on the front lines—a seductress and a battering ram. But as she’s continued to be a force while she deigns to grow older, she’s faced a new frontier of abuse. There has never been a pop star writing and performing at her level, and demanding a seat at the table, at her age. Why wouldn’t Madonna demand it?
One of the great conundrums of the Internet era is pop culture’s short memory; the receipts are right there to be found, yet few bother to do the looking. But yes, in a career spanning four decades, Madonna made real cultural change, and caused a few cultural crises, over and over again. For all the criticism she’s weathered during four decades in the spotlight, she deserves a birthday celebration.

THE WEDDING DRESS IS SEXY
If Madonna has been perpetually unapologetic (see: “Human Nature,” “Unapologetic Bitch”), it is partly because she ignited so much controversy at the beginning of her career by barely striking a match. Basically, she wore a wedding dress, while singing about the joys of sex, on a song called “Like a Virgin.” Also: She rolled around in the wedding dress while performing that song live on MTV. And the wedding dress wasn’t really your typical wedding dress, but a lace corset cinched by a belt that said “Boy Toy” on the buckle. And underneath she wore a white garter belt that was seen by a hefty percentage of America.

So it took a lot of work but we finally completed it.
Since the start of our website we have had the ‘In the Media’ section up, including the times we have been in the media whether it was in a magazine, newspaper, tv or certain events. However we never fully updated it, so we basically left it to linger. Since there was a lot of media going on surrounding Madonna’s birthday, we felt it really needed a make-over.

It’s been said that the most important ingredient of a great leader is courage because everything else flows from that.
A grand case in point is Madonna and the courage it took to build herself into a “one-of-a-kind” legendary entertainment leader. (Forbes reports her 2018 net worth at $590 million.) She recently turned 60 on August 16.
While her style is admittedly edgy and, and not for everyone, her courage to be herself and blaze her own trail is undeniable.
Consider these “Madonna” leadership lessons:
Be Responsible
Madonna lost her mother to breast cancer when she was 4. Wikipedia quotes her as saying: “The anguish of losing my mom left me with a certain kind of loneliness and an incredible longing for something. If I hadn’t had that emptiness, I wouldn’t have been so driven. Her death had a lot to do with me saying—after I got over my heartache—I’m going to be really strong if I can’t have my mother. I’m going to take care of myself.”
Madonna showed early signs of self-discipline. She was a straight-A student and a member of her high school’s cheerleading squad. After graduating, she received a dance scholarship to the University Of Michigan School Of Music, Theatre & Dance.
Be Brave
In 1978, Madonna dropped out of college and relocated to New York City. “When I came to New York, it was the first time I’d ever taken a plane, it was the first time I’d ever gotten in a taxi cab, it was the first time for everything. And I came here not knowing anyone with thirty-five dollars in my pocket. It was the bravest thing I’ve ever done. ….. I can’t believe how frightened I was when I look back at it, but I was.”
Bootstrap Your Startup
Using other people’s equipment, from midnight to eight in the morning, Madonna and her crew completed her first demo tape.
But she was very strategic about sharing it.
First she built rapport and earned the respect of a former talent scout for Island Records, Disc Jockey Mark Kamins. “I hung out for about a month at Danceteria before I got enough courage to tell him I had a tape for him to listen to. I didn’t want to sound like another girl with another tape.” It worked. Kamins used his connections to help Madonna win her first record contract. “I planned the whole thing,” she said.
Use Naysayers For Motivation
Naysayers and detractors were rocket fuel for Madonna.
In her riveting acceptance speech for Billboard’s Woman of The Year Award Madonna opened up about the hardest personal challenges of her career. “To the doubters and naysayers and everyone who gave me hell and said I could not, that I would not or I must not ,” she said, “Your resistance made me stronger, made me push harder, made me the fighter that I am today.”
Give A Voice To Others
In the same speech, Madonna reminded the audience about what life was like when she first moved to New York City. She said, “People were dying of AIDS everywhere. It wasn’t safe to be gay, it wasn’t cool to be associated with the gay community.”
Madonna has bravely challenged sexism and homophobia, using her fame and power to champion for gay rights and promote equality. She’s been there and knows of what she speaks.
In the spirit of giving voice to others, Madonna has embraced newcomers to the stage. When Britney Spears and Lady Gaga became stars, she appeared on stage with them at awards shows and on Saturday Night Live, thrilling her fans and introducing her to a younger audiences who can also appreciate her role in music history.
Things To Ponder
—It takes courage not to comply with the expectations and rules others have for us.
Consider a time you had to truly stand your ground. Were the consequences what you expected? Would you change anything?
Think of other leaders you admire. What penance have they paid for their actions? Do you think it’s worth it?
—As you rise, put a hand out for others and help them. Chances are you’ll find it very fulfilling and it makes for good Karma.

Singer, songwriter, and director John Duff has released his first pop creation with the song and music video, “Girly.” The song celebrates femininity and fluidity in a fabulous and direct way, riding on a giant 808 bass line and a carefree R&B vibe reminiscent of the late 90s. “It’s about freedom. It’s about expression. It’s about equality. Above all, it’s f*cking fierce,” Duff said. Watch the “Girly” music video HERE.
Duff confidently embraces his femininity on the mid-tempo-dance track’s adjoining video – paying meticulous homage to pop queens including Madonna (“Hung Up”), Mariah Carey (“Heartbeaker”), Britney Spears (“Stronger”), Beyoncé (“Crazy in Love”) and Christina Aguilera (“Come on Over”). As the kids say, “it’s iconic.” The music video also features drag superstars Bianca Del Rio, Willam and Mariah Balenciaga.
Duff’s song rejects toxic masculinity, promoting honest and genuine self expression. “You could have your pump on – two plates. Or get your pumps on – first date. No one cares just pump the bass, full speed ahead don’t pump the breaks.”
Duff adds, “’Girly’ is a very literal song. I wrote it upon hearing critique that my ideas weren’t going to work because of their feminine nature, I was told that I would do better in the industry by playing up my masculinity. I found these words to be insulting to my creative mind and to femininity in general. Being girly, or being a girl for that matter, is nothing to be ashamed of. The video was created from those same frustrations. While paying homage to some of my greatest female influences, I wanted to highlight the sexualization of female performers and how absurd it looks to simply replace the ingenue with a hairy man.”

Ten years ago today Madonna kicked off her Sticky & Sweet Tour in Cardiff.
The tour which was quite a departure from the theatrical shows we’d gotten to used to (and adored), became her most succesful tour to date (with the 2009 leg included). Sticky & Sweet is probably Madonna’s most energetic show to date, focusing on dancing instead of story-telling.
