Madonna and Maluma to perform new song at Billboard Awards
NEW YORK — Madonna and Colombian singer Maluma will bring their new collaboration to life when they perform at next month’s Billboard Music Awards.
NBC and dick clark productions announced Friday the duo will sing “Medellin” at the May 1 event in Las Vegas.
The song, released on Wednesday, is from Madonna’s 14th album “Madame X,” out June 14. She said the Latin-flavored album was inspired from living in Lisbon, Portugal, for the last few years.
Maluma has had major success on the Latin charts since releasing his sophomore album, 2015’s “Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy.” The 25-year-old singer won his first Latin Grammy last year for “F.A.M.E.” — also nominated for top Latin album at the Billboard Awards.
Other performers will include BTS, Halsey, Kelly Clarkson, Jonas Brothers, Sam Smith, Normani and Mariah Carey.

Madame X: Everything We Know About Madonna’s New Album (W Magazine)

Madonna may have moved to Portugal to be a soccer mom, but it seems Madame X is anything but. She’s a professor, a housekeeper, a head of state, an equestrian, etc., etc., etc. That we know from the teaser video and Instagram Madge released to officially announce her upcoming 14th studio album, but that doesn’t really do much to clue us into what we should actually expect from Madame X. The first single “Medellín,” featuring Colombian singer Maluma, gave us a taste, and confirmed that the album will have a general feel inspired by Latin countries, but there will be 12 other tracks when the album drops on June 14th. Here’s everything we know (or at least that we think we know) about the album.
The album marks Madonna’s reunion with Mirwais.
Mirwais was a relatively obscure French producer until Madonna got a hold of his demo tape and decided to tap him to produce and co-write select songs on her album Music(including the titular single), most of its follow-up American Life, as well as her underrated entry into the James Bond theme cannon, “Die Another Day” and some songs on Confession on a Dance Floor. Despite her reputation, Madonna remains pretty loyal to her favorite contributors. She usually has them sit an album cycle or two out (lest her sound becomes too monotonous), but almost always returns to them again down the line. So the reunion with Mirwais shouldn’t be particularly shocking. If anything, it was his time to get called back. Mirwais co-wrote six of the album’s tracks, and we assume produced just as many (though, the full production credits haven’t been released).
Starrah is the other major writing collaborator, but Diplo and Mike Dean helped out as well.
Starrah (credited under her legal name Brittany Talia Hazzard) also co-wrote five of the songs on the album. The Diplo protégée has been on quite a co-writing run lately, with credits on Camila Cabello’s “Havana,” Maroon 5’s “Girl Like You,” and Rihanna’s “Needed Me.” She’s joined, of course, on one song by Diplo himself. Meanwhile, hip-hop producer Mike Dean, who helped on Rebel Heart, will also return.
Oh, and Madonna’s son also has a co-writing credit.
At least we think. The track “Batuka” is credited to Madonna, Starrah, and “Banda,” who we assume is David Banda, the soccer-playing son whom Madonna moved to Portugal for in the first place.
Swae Lee, Quavo, and Anitta will also feature.
Swae Lee, half of the rap group Rae Sremmurd, figures on a song titled “Crave.” Meanwhile, Quavo, part of Migos, is on “Future,” perhaps paying Madonna back for appearing on his own song “Champagne Rosé” alongside Cardi B. And Anitta features on “Faz Gostoso”; she’s a Brazilian superstar who might be best known in America for her frequent collaborations with J Balvin.
A music video of some sort will feature queens from RuPual’s Drag Race…probably.
If you’re not aware, RuPaul’s Drag Race has created an entire cottage industry of drag, and Madonna inadvertently caused some drama within when she may have recruited All Stars 4 winner Monét X. Change to appear in a project, presumably a music video, but that wasn’t clear. Monét was rather rudely and publicly fired from a tour she was on by promoters, and that’s how the general public came to know it was over a project with Madonna. Whatever the case, it also seems like Monét will not be the only Drag Race girl to appear in the project. It seems like bonus videos featuring drag queens is quite the trend at the moment, so maybe that’s what we should expect from Madonna as well.
However, a music video will not feature a horse inside a palace…probably.
According to the Portuguese press, officials in the historic town of Sintra reportedly refused to allow Madonna to bring a horse into a palace that was built in 1860. Though, Madonna’s reps denied the rumors. Adding some confusion to the story is that the press reported the video was for a song called “Indian Summer,” but there’s no track by that name on Madame X‘s track list.
Steven Klein has handled the album art so far.
Though there were some rumors that Madge might reunite with another of her superstar photographer collaborators, instead she’s returned to Steven Klein who also shot the covers for Hard Candy and Confessions. He even directed the album teaser alongside video artist Nuno Xico. Though he’s directed music videos for other stars and tour visuals for Madonna, the pair have never collaborated on an actual music video.
7. The “Medellin” video debuts next week, but there’s a teaser now.
The video for the first single will premiere on the 24th on MTV stations across the globe, but the Queen of Pop released a teaser on her Instagram earlier this morning.
It’s unclear who was behind the camera for the video, but we guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Madonna breaks silence as she drops new single Medellin: ‘I found my tribe’ (press release)
MADONNA has sent fans into meltdown after releasing her long-awaited comeback single.
Opening up about her new era, Madonna, 60, said: “Lisbon is where my record was born.
“I found my tribe there and a magical world of incredible musicians that reinforced my belief that music across the world is truly all connected and is the soul of the universe.”
Chatting about the teaming up with the Colombian singer, Madonna continued: “I met him backstage at the Video Music Awards and the next day he sent me flowers and said what an honour it was to meet me.
“He has a great work ethic – he doesn’t leave the studio until it is done.”
“Maluma has a great work ethic – he doesn’t leave the studio until it is done”
Madonna
Madonna moved to the Portuguese capital in 2017 in a bid to help her son, David Banda follow his dreams of becoming a professional footballer.
“I’ve been desperate to get him into the best academies with the best coaches, but the level of football in America is much lower than the rest of the world,” Madonna told Vogue Italia in 2018.
She added: “I saw his frustration, and I also felt it was a good time.
“I felt like we needed a change, and I wanted to get out of America for a minute — as you know, this is not America’s finest hour.”
Flooding Twitter as the single dropped, fans gushed over the controversial star’s return to form.
Another added: “Medellin sounds f***ing good.”
Medellin’s release marks the official countdown to the release of her 14th studio album Madame X.
Recorded over 18 months in Portugal, London, New York and Los Angeles, Madonna has teamed up with some of the biggest producers in the world including Major Lazer legend Diplo, Mirwais and Mike Dean.
During the 15-song offering, the Like A Prayer superstar sings in three languages – Portuguese, Spanish and English.
To promote the big reveal, the pop superstar will join BBC DJ Trevor Nelson for special MTV event, MTV Presents Madonna Live & Exclusive: Medellín Video World Premiere.
The show will see Madge open up about the influences on her new album and the creative forces behind her transcendent career.
Medellin collaborator Maluma is expected to join in the event from Miami.
Taking place in Tel Aviv, Israel on May 18, the gig is slated to net Madge a staggering $1million for the performance.
While unconfirmed, it is believed Tel Aviv businessman Sylvan Adams will pay the bill.
Last year, 186m viewers tuned in to watch the global music competition around the world.

Here’s what the lyrics to Madonna’s ‘Medellin’ translate to (NME)
A full translation of Madonna’s ‘Medellin’ is now available, meaning fans can now fully understand what the Queen of Pop’s latest song is all about.
Yesterday (April 17), Madonna released ‘Medellin’ and revealed details of her highly anticipated new album, ‘Madame X’ – her first album in four years.
In her new cha-cha inspired song, Madonna sings about a dream she had of being 17-years-old. Madge finds herself in Colombia before Latin artist Maluma reassures her she is safe and can be found in his hometown – Medellin.
The song then takes a turn as Maluma tells Madonna he will travel with her, protect her and love her if she agrees to be his queen.
You can read the full translation, as printed originally in Billboard here:
Verse 1: Madonna & Maluma
I took a pill and had a dream (Me too)
I went back to my 17th year
Allowed myself to be naive (Tell me)
To be someone I’ve never been (I love it)
I took a sip and had a dream
And I woke up in Medellín (Do you like it?)
The sun was caressing my skin (Tell me)
Another me could now begin (Woo)
Verse 2: Maluma
Relax, baby, I got you
We don’t have to talk much to get things started
If you want to be my queen, I’ll crown you
And here’s a throne for you to take a seat
You like to ride, that’s clear
If you feel that I’m going fast, I’ll take it down a notch
Excuse me, I know you’re Madonna
But I’ll show you how this dog makes you fall in love
Chorus: Madonna & Maluma
Come with me, let’s take a trip
I’ll take you to a far away place
Come with me, I’ll be so good for you
You’ll fall for me, You’ll fall for me, mami (Ay-ay-ay)
Come with me, let’s take a trip
Give me some of what you’re drinking
Come with me, I’ll be so good for you
(Ay-ay-ay)
Verse 3: Madonna & Maluma
Sipping my pain just like champagne
Found myself dancing in the rain with you
I felt so naked and alive (Show me)
For once I didn’t have to hide myself (Say it)
Verse 4: Maluma
Hey mamacita, what’s wrong? (Tell me)
We’re already at my place (Yeah)
If you feel that there’s a trip in your mine (woo)
Maybe it’s because of the Aguardiente (tell them)
But baby, relax, enjoy the moment
We are in Colombia, there’s a party in every corner
And if you want, we’ll go to Detroit (You know)
If I know where you come from, then I know where to go
Chorus
Post-Chorus: Maluma & Madonna
You’ll fall for me (If I fall for you)
In less than a year, no, no (Hahaha)
We’re going, we’re going to Medallo (Oh, how sweet)
You’ll fall for me (If I fall for you)
It’s what I love, no, no
Then mami, mami, mami, we’ll get married
(Cha-cha-cha)
Verse 5: Madonna & Maluma
We built a cartel just for love
Venus was hovering above us (Oh, yeah)
I took a trip, it set me free (My queen)
Forgave myself for being me (Ay-ay-ay)
According to a press release, ‘Madame X’ was inspired creatively by Madonna residing in Portugal over the past several years. It states that the 15-track record is made up of songs “that celebrate Madonna’s career-long affair with Latin music and culture as well as other global influences.”
“Lisbon is where my record was born,” Madonna said. “I found my tribe there and a magical world of incredible musicians that reinforced my belief that music across the world is truly all connected and is the soul of the universe.”
Meanwhile, Madonna has been confirmed to perform at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Last week, representatives for Madonna confirmed to NME that she’ll be performing two songs at the final on May 18 in Tel Aviv.

Madonna will join British DJ Trevor Nelson and fans live from London for a conversation about the influences of her new album, and the creative forces behind her career. “Medellín” collaborator and global Latin superstar Maluma will join live from Miami. Madonna will also take questions during the event via satellite from MTV’s Sway Calloway and fans in New York City, with additional MTV-hosted events in Milan (hosted by MTV Italy Riccanza star Tommaso Zorzi) and São Paulo (hosted by Brazilian entertainer Hugo Gloss).
The 30-minute special will debut live across MTV’s digital platforms and linear channels in nearly 180 countries.
“Madonna and MTV have been intrinsically tied since their respective youths,” said Bruce Gillmer, global head of music and talent, Viacom, and co-brand head, MTV International. “As Madonna continues to rule the world, we’re thrilled to be with her once again live from our Camden studios to world premiere her incredible collaboration with Maluma, Medellín.”
It was, after all, at the inaugural VMAs where the pop icon graced the stage in a wedding dress to perform Like a Virgin, in her first major award show performance.
