The American Ballet Theatre principal performed the choreography (on pointe!) from the music video for his newest pop hit, WTF, which he released under the moniker, JbDubs in April. Whiteside was joined by four backup dancers: Matthew Poppe, Douane Gosa, Maxfield Haynes and Gianni Goffredo. Catch a clip of the performance below.
Madonna’s party took place in the midst of rehearsals for her upcoming Madame X tour. According to Vulture, Madonna was give the name Madame X by Graham herself, after showing up to class each day with a different identity. And of course, we love Madonna’s choice of JbDubs song. Of Whiteside’s musical oeuvre, WTF most explicitly targets a ballet audience, with lyrics referring to George Balanchine, the Rose Adagio, former New York Times dance critic Alastair Macaulay, Sergei Polunin and much more. Whether or not Madonna’s guests understood all of Whiteside’s references doesn’t seem to matter; we guess they were more than taken with the quintet’s precision, attitude and impressive pointe work.
This appearance leaves us wondering if Madonna will give Whiteside and Co. bigger platforms on which to perform. After all, Whiteside is already besties with actress Jennifer Garner, and he toured with pop star Rozzi earlier this year. In the meantime, we’re looking forward to seeing Whiteside back onstage at ABT this fall.
Happy Birthday, M!

Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)

It’s difficult to shake the 1980s these days. This week, the decade is being the celebrated at BAM as part of its film series, “Punks, Poets & Valley Girls; Women Directors in 1980s America.” One of those directors is Susan Seidelman, whose films Smithereens and the more commercial Desperately Seeking Susan are a celebration of what we might, in 2019, call alt culture. They’re also love letters to downtown Manhattan.
In the mid-’80s, lower Manhattan was a universe unto itself, and also a foil to uptown and the suburbs. Downtown responded to polish with grit, to new with vintage, and to politesse with sass. It was home to Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat and the Michigan-born Madonna Louise Ciccone, who by sheer force of style and will, became the poster girl of the scene.

It wasn’t easy for women to fit into the groove in the 1980s, as Desperately Seeking Susan shows. Housewives like Roberta (played by Rosanna Arquette) and grifters like Susan (the Madonna role) existed in a world where men controlled the resources. Roberta struggles to adhere to its strictures, while her squeaky clean looking-husband leads a double life. Susan is blatant about her rebellion, and in some ways, free.

Thomas Gold has been keeping busy producing music and touring, but the artist has kept it particularly fresh for fans as he continues to diversify his portfolio. Whether with his tech house alias AU-1 or experimenting with new sounds like tropical-leaning “Seventeen,” Gold is one of those producers who increasingly has something for everyone. His latest release is his remix of Madonna‘s “I Rise,” which is the final release from recent album Madame X.
Gold spoke with Dancing Astronaut about being chosen to do the remix, explaining, “It’s a great honor to do an official remix for Madonna. I grew up to all her music, she was kind of always ‘there’ as she released so many great songs throughout the years. So when I got the request to do a remix for ‘I Rise,’ I was like ‘Yes, I want to do this, but I want to deliver something which pays respect to Madonna’s voice and the vibe of the original song.’”
The original track is a slow and sultry tune that highlights Madonna’s vocals. A slow pulsating humming in the background is juxtaposed with her singing, leaving the vocals to do most of the work on the track. Gold speaks to his goal for the remix, saying, “As the original version runs at a much slower tempo than my remix, I had to find the right way to speed up the vocal and the sounds I intended to use – without losing the vibe of the original.”
Gold keeps Madonna’s alluring vocals intact with the same cool tone of the original, but he completely transforms the BPM and enlists a vintage house style that is fitting, as those who are familiar with Madonna’s earlier releases can attest.
He explains the creative process behind what yielded his final result, saying, “I went for a classic house style approach with some well-known organ and piano sounds (hello Korg M1!), which I thought would fit perfectly for her voice. For the verses, I created a completely new chord progression. It was actually just a spontaneous idea I had, but I liked it, so I kept it. Once I had put together the basic sounds and the layout structure of the remix, it was just about creating a good flow throughout the track. I also used almost the entire original vocal, this was not too difficult, and it was fun to see how everything came together nicely.”
Ultimately, Gold trades in some of the sultry mood for more of a euphoric one, and his remix takes the track to a dance-worthy and fun-loving piece of music that showcases both artists at their finest. It’s an infectious song to begin with, but Gold’s house touch takes the track to the next level.
“At the end, I was happy that I had been able to still maintain some of the typical ‘Madonna’ vocal sound whilst giving the music a completely fresh approach,” Gold says. “And I was super happy when I got the final approval from Madonna and her team!”

Madonna cut loose with family on her 61st birthday!
The songstress, who is currently rehearsing for her Madame X tour, marked the special occasion on Friday with her loved ones, some tasty treats, dancing and much more. She took to Instagram on her birthday to post key moments from the festivities, including her backup dancers, family and crew presenting her with a table loaded up with pastries spelling out “Happy birthday Madonna.”
Madonna also posted a video of her daughter, Mercy James, and son, David Banda, both 13, delivering an impressive “birthday dance” for the camera at the facility where rehearsals are taking place.
But the fun didn’t end there. At the birthday bash, Mercy hopped on a piano and played Elton John’s classic track “Your Song,” while her brother, David, lead the attendees in singing. Madonna, sporting an eye patch and military garb, beamed nearby.
Fans also got a peek at the huge dance party that later ensued with the birthday girl fittingly at the center of all the pageantry. Madonna’s twin daughters Estere and Stelle, 6, were also on hand for all the fun.
ET spoke with Madonna in May at the 2019 GLAAD Media Awards in New York City where she discussed the many talks she has had with her children about finding purpose in life and the responsibility to help others.
“Well, we have many discussions about what they want to be when they grow up, why they’re here, why they were born, why we chose each other — like why did their souls choose me, why did my soul choose them?” she said. “And we have a lot of discussions about responsibility. Everybody’s here for a purpose, not just to become famous or to get lots of money or to whatever…to have things — that we are here to help one another and to affect change and to make the world a better place. So that’s a message I hope has been ground into their brains.”
Besides David, Mercy, Estere and Stelle, the songstress is mother to son Rocco, 19, and daughter Lourdes, 22.
